Marine technician's expertise will again be challenged this season as engine manufacturers, in their quest to satisfy increased performance demands as well as upcoming California emission regulations, utilize more sophisticated and diverse engine management systems. That is quite a contrast for an industry segment which only six years ago used a single type of electronic control module across virtually all engine brands.
Two new electronic control modules introduced by Volvo Penta and one by Indmar bring the total number of in-production ECM types to six for the sterndrive / inboard engine market. Volvo Penta and Indmar both launched engines equipped with entirely new EFI control modules.
